Cathy Reimer is a teacher at Aldershot Elementary School in Aldershot, Nova Scotia. She has been teaching for 27 years. She receives a Heritage National Excellence Award for Teachers (NEAT) award because she respects her students and finds ways to support them academically, emotionally and socially, regardless of their needs.  She is very active in her community and she often brings her school together as a whole to nurture a sense of community. Ms. Reimer always makes learning interesting to her students. Every June she plans a class trip to the Fundy shore and makes the trip a multi-disciplinary teaching opportunity.

Christine d’Avernas teaches at Flemington Public School in Toronto, Ontario.
Ms. d’Avernas receives a Heritage National Excellence Awards for Teacher (NEAT) award because she is not only an outstanding teacher but also an active leader in the community. She really makes every effort to learn about her students, learning phrases of their first languages and sending them thank you notes, birthday cards and postcards during holidays and phoning every student before the first day of school to introduce herself. She brings teaching to life; she brings coffee beans and lemons when teaching the senses and music to teach dance. She has been the school liaison for the Parent Council for 13 years. She works tirelessly at recruiting sponsors and volunteers, picking up food and selling items to fund school activities.

Sallie Boschung

Vancouver, British Columbia

Sallie Boschung teaches at Douglas Annex in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ms. Boschung receives a Heritage National Excellence Awards for Teacher (NEAT) award because she is a very hands-on teacher and brings positive energy to her classroom.  Her class made regular trips to the senior’s long term care facility to sing songs and do crafts with the seniors. She also arranges trips to the neighborhood library and fire hall and to make children aware of their surroundings. Her teaching style has encouraged and shaped many family discussions. Ms. Boschung always challenges and encourages her class to learn and reach their full potential.

Steve Bock

Courtice, Ontario

Steve Bock is a teacher at Durham Christian Academy in Courtice, Ontario. He is a consummate professional, regularly attending courses to upgrade his skills and learn new techniques that will enhance the classroom, often at his own expense. Mr. Bock was the first teacher at his school to make use of new technology, patiently and consistently updating a website on a daily basis. His students benefit from using the website to keep up with their assignments, quizzes and activities.  The website also serves as a great tool to communicate with parents. Parents can email Mr. Bock with any questions or concerns and Mr. Bock always responds in a timely manner.

Janine Gummesen

Grande Prairie, Alberta

Janine Gummesen teaches at Ecole St. Gerard School in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Ms. Gummesen is a very dedicated teacher, who takes time from her busy schedule to hold weekly homework club sessions after school to help her students, she also created a junior leadership group and provided them with leadership skills. Ms. Gummesen believes in children and community. She organizes monthly family events such as movies and educational school trips.  She also created and wrote plays with her students dealing with sensitive issues such as bullying and abuse that were performed in front of the community. During summer months, Ms. Gummesen organized a Summer French camp which allowed students to keep improving their French skills.
