Awakening of the Dragon

Heritage sponsors the 22nd Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival

2010-05-27

(Toronto, May 27, 2010) Heritage Education Funds is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the Families Friendly Corner for the 22nd Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival this year. This years Dragon Boat festival will host more than 160 teams with over 5,000 participants from around the world. This festival is one of the biggest and most exciting summer events in Toronto, and will be held at Long Pond, Centre Island, in Toronto on June 19 and 20, 2010.

Onofrio Loduca, Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Education Funds, attended the spectacular eye dotting ceremony "Hoi Gong", which means awakening of the dragon from his sleep at the Sunnyside Beach Pavilion. With the magic touch of a Chinese calligraphy brush on the dragon's eyeball by the officiating dignitaries, the dragon boat comes alive. This symbolizes the beginning of the dragon boating season in Toronto.

"We are proud to be a sponsor for the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival again this year," remarks Mr. Loduca.  "The event promotes cultural diversity, tradition and brings sportsmanship and community spirits together.  And in the same way, we are very happy to support the Toronto Chinese Business Association as it continues passing down this rich cultural 'heritage' to the next generation."

With support from the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Tourism and Culture this year, the festival has a new component – a Dragon Boat Mini-Museum that focuses on the historical and cultural aspects of the Dragon Boat festival, from which the current dragon boat race has emerged.  The Mini-Museum will be open to the public from June 18 to June 20 on Centre Island. Through demonstration and hands-on displays, this new component will allow attendees to learn more about the Dragon Boat Festival and the Chinese culture.
